The Basilica of Maxentius
The Emperor Maxentius never saw his Basilica finished. He died on the banks of the Tiber at the Pons Milvius in 312 AD in the battle against Emperor Constantine. It was in fact Constantine who inaugurated the building after making (of course!) a few modifications. From the plan of Maxentius he preserved the long vista (shown below) down the central nave, so as to concentrate attention on the colossal statue of himself. An earthquake in the 14th century collapsed the roof.
