Colosseum - Interior
There were numerous entrances, broad corridors, stairways, carefully planned passages of access and six tiers of seats so that spectators could go to the shows in comfort. The shows consisted essentially of gladiatorial combats and wild beast hunts. An elaborate complex of passages and rooms underneath the arena provided storerooms for the stage properties and cages for the animals which could be brought up to the arena, and produced at the appropriate moment by the ingenious device of trapdoors and pulleys.
